Position Scope

Reporting directly to the Superintendent of Reliability, the Technical Coordinator – Mine Mobile Alternative Fuel Retrofits, will coordinate NACG’s mine mobile engine retrofit initiatives aimed at reducing the engines’ environmental impact. The Technical Coordinator will be NACG’s internal subject matter expert on existing and emerging industry relevant engine technologies.  They will primarily act as a coordinator on NACG’s mine mobile engine / power supply retrofit initiatives, taking them from proof of concept to fleetwide implementation.


  • Develop and maintain knowledge regarding the various diesel engine replacement technologies, including but not limited to Dynamic Gas Blend with Natural Gas, Dynamic Gas Blend with Hydrogen, Hydrogen Fuel Cells (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs)), etc.
  • Research, develop and maintain knowledge regarding existing and emerging:
    • engine technologies to reduce environmental impact;
    • relevant government environmental regulations in the regions the company operates;
    • third-party and government funding opportunities.
  • Work with executives, Reliability/Maintenance personnel, vendors, research institution personnel, among others, to handle the company’s proof-of-concept diesel engine replacement initiatives with the ultimate end goal of fleet-wide retrofits.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Registered or eligible for registration with APEGA.
  • Minimum 2 years of work experience in a diesel engines or heavy equipment environment, specializing in Mining Equipment.
  • Minimum 1 year project coordination experience.
  • Capable of both strategic and tactical thinking with a drive to meet quality, cost and schedule targets.
  • Thorough knowledge of diesel engines, mining equipment, maintenance practices and procedures.
  • Demonstrated project coordination ability, with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Detailed working knowledge of planning tools (JD Edwards (ERP), MS Office Package; including MS Project, etc.).
  • Able to build effective relationships with internal customers and external vendors.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to independently research topics.
  • Self-Starter, with drive to take ownership of the program and make continuous improvements.


All successful candidates must:

  1. Be proficient in English, both verbally and written
  2. Have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  3. Have experience as requested as mentioned above
  4. Subject to Random Testing at: Suncor, Suncor Fort Hills and Kearl sites
  5. Disclose COVID-19 vaccination status:
    • Fully immunized individuals must provide government issued proof of vaccination to be exempt from site testing requirements
    • Individuals not fully immunized may be subject to site COVID-19 testing requirements and associated costs
  6. Undergo and successfully pass the following testing:
    • Breath Alcohol Test
    • Urine Drug Test
    • Fitness-to-Work Assessment
    • Audiometric Testing
    • Vision Screening
