Position Scope

Reporting the Chief People Officer, the Human Resources Director is responsible for leading the organization’s human resources strategy in alignment with business objectives. This role provides strategic and operational leadership across all HR functions, including talent management, employee relations, labour relations, compensation, payroll and total rewards.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Be Doing

 

Direct Human Resources programs and processes

  • Provide leadership, coaching, and direction to the Human Resources team to deliver high-quality HR support across the organization
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and governance of compensation and Total Rewards programs, including salary structures, incentive plans, and benefits to ensure market competitiveness and alignment with corporate strategy
  • Direct the organization’s compensation philosophy, ensuring internal equity, external competitiveness, and alignment with performance outcomes
  • Ensure proactive and effective performance management processes across the organization
  • Maintain and oversee internal controls in accordance with corporate governance standards, including compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and external reporting requirements

Develop and implement Human Resources and corporate programs, policies and procedures

  • Lead the development and implementation of HR policies, programs, and procedures aligned with corporate and operational objectives
  • Ensure effective integration of HR programs with broader business initiatives and operational requirements
  • Oversee employee training and annual recertification on corporate values, Code of Conduct, and ethics policies
  • Identify and monitor legal and statutory requirements impacting HR, ensuring compliance and mitigating organizational risk
  • Act as the primary liaison with internal and external legal counsel on employment and labour matters

Organizational Strategy and Leadership Support

  • Provide strategic advice and coaching to executive and operational leadership on all people-related matters
  • Support organizational design, workforce planning, and leadership development initiatives
  • Establish and maintain effective employee relations and internal communication practices to foster engagement and a positive workplace culture
  • Participate in estimating, contracts, and business development processes by advising on labour strategy, workforce requirements, and collective agreement considerations
  • Provide ongoing insights and recommendations to leadership to improve employee management practices and organizational effectiveness
  • Lead and manage HR-related content for the Management Information Circular (MIC) and other governance disclosures

Direct labour and employee relations

  • Manage multiple collective agreements through supporting grievance resolutions, preparing for labour arbitrations, acting as spokesperson and advisor during negotiations, and communicating collective agreement settlement results to appropriate parties
  • Liaise with senior operations management on a clear collective bargaining mandate prior to commencing collective bargaining and provide expertise to the process
  • Build positive working relationships with union leadership 
  • Investigate and prepare for quasi-judicial hearings including Labour Relations, Human Rights, and Employment Standards hearings
  • Provide resources to coach and advice to resolve issues involving employees and management
  • Develop and deliver coaching and training to operational management and leadership regarding employee relations matters

Qualifications

What Makes You the ONE

 

  • 10 years’ experience gained through increasingly responsible management position within Human Resources (or in progressive generalist positions)
  • Experience and/or exposure to unionized labour force
  • Industrial construction and/or mining industry experience preferred
  • Related Bachelor’s Degree
  • Specialized training in organizational planning, compensation, and labour relations
  • Ability to align HR programs and practices to support the organization
  • Proven track record in implementing and executing strategies, programs, and processes
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to assess situations not only from an HR perspective but also from a business perspective
  • Proactive in identification and resolution of human and organizational issues and opportunities
  • Strong leadership and coaching skills with excellent relationship building abilities
  • Well defined sense of diplomacy including solid negotiation, conflict resolution and people management skills
  • Understand/familiar with the critical issues as it pertains to key Human Resources functions
  • Ability to manage competing priorities
  • Practical knowledge of relevant legislation and legal environment, specifically labour law and employment standards
  • Able work collaboratively with other organizational and functional leaders and external client leaders and managers, with the interest and ability to mentor others
  • Results oriented with a customer and client focus
